As a mother I worry. While I like to think that my worry levels rate pretty low on the scale of mother worrying I still do it. I can’t help it. John, he’s the Dad, worry is not in his job description, so as the Mom I’ve got to pick up a bit of the slack.
Currently I’m worried that Ivy may have a speech problem.
She seems to add this superfluous “mmmm” sound to the beginning of everything and let me tell you, in addition to worrying that her new speech issue will affect her fluency and general communication, it’s beginning to drive me crazy.
We tried working on it today:
Ivy: “Mom, can I…”
Me: ” You already have my attention just say can I, you don’t have to say Mom.”
Ivy: ” Mom, OK but…”
Me: “No, don’t say Mom, just say OK.”
Ivy: “Mom, OK, Mom can I…”
Me: “No, hear the “mmm” don’t make the “mmm” sound.”
Ivy: Mom, can I…
A speech therapist I am not.
Then we went to Farm and Fleet and she continued to make that awful “mmm” noise. Except the “mmm” had evolved into a full fledged “MMMMMOOOOOMMMM!!!!!” complete with lots of tears eliciting quite a few looks of pity from other shoppers.
I think they must have been worried about her speech problem too.
Oh my, I think Johnny might have the same speech problem…..hmmmmmm.
What? Don’t they grow out of these things… or is that when they start saying “moother” instead… perhaps that’s not any better!
Bad news is, that ones contagious. Have you listened to Clara lately, mom? 🙂
Bad news is right. As a speech theripsit what’s your professional opinion on just how contagious that is? Could I go with Katie’s idea and teach Jane to call me Queen or once it’s infected my house am I doomed forever???
Hm, well, I’m afraid there is a lot of likeness in the tone, volume and vocal quality of Ivy’s “MOM” and Clara’s “MOOOMMM” so all signs point to doom.
I think you should tell Ivy to call you “Queen.” The /kwa/ sound would at least give you a little variety. 🙂 And, then you could reinforce the hierarchy of a royal family…ooh, maybe even introducing a dungeon??
I like it! of course if she starts talking about dungeons in Farm and Fleet that could be a whole new problem!
Oh, you bring back so many memories, Jessie! I remember not wanting to hear “Mom” one more time. Now, these many years later, every “Mom” on the telephone, in an email, and in person lights up the day!
I’ll try to remember that, next time I’m ready to pull out the earplugs!
