Ivy’s Favorites at Seven Years Old

Ivy, what’s your favorite…Ivy and daffodils

Color – Blue (So, let me tell you a little story. There was a week or two of school where all the kids were encouraged to dress a different color every day. And every day Ivy insisted that she had nothing green to wear or that all her red clothes were dirty or that she didn’t like brown. Until pink day. Pink day she was all pink. According to John when he asked about her sudden enthusiasm for color day she said, “I can out pink anybody!” But that was then, we are into blue now. Apparently. )

Animal – Dolphins and manatees. (That’s news to me as well. Good thing I ask these questions, already I’ve learned so much!)

Food – Pizza

Clothes – Dresses

Dog – Trip

Cat – Cassie (It’s mutual. Cassie goes and sleeps on her bed even on the nights Ivy doesn’t track her down and lock her in her bedroom,)

Person – You

Thing to do – Play with Natalie and Sarah. (Sarah is Natalie’s mom. And sorry Sarah, I don’t actually think she wants to play with you. This is just her way of differentiating her friends named Natalie)

Thing to do outside – Play on the rope swing (The rope swing is very popular around here!)

Chore – I don’t have one. (Oh so true!)

Time of day – Night

Place to go – Water park

Song – Let it Go (Please could someone convince her you only sing “Let it go” twice in the chorus not three times!)

Flower – Rose

Farm Animal – Horses

Thing about school – Recess

Friend – Lucy

Movie – Frozen (Our friend told us Frozen is like crack for kids, I think he’s right.)

Thing to do with Clara – Play baby and mamma. (The game that will not die.)

Thing to do with Jane – Take a bath. (That’s funny because every time she takes a bath and Jane wants to get in with her she freaks out and says she hates taking baths with Jane.)

Thing to do with Dad – Work in the workshop.

Thing to do with Me – Have you read to me.

Book – Pee Wee Scout

Meal –  Dinner, because we can have dessert. (Yeah!)

Thing to do in the car – Play with magnet books. (I agree magnet books are a fantastic toy to bring out on long car rides.)

What do you want to do when you grown up? Be a diver in the Olympics. (I’m already cringing waiting to hear what John has to say about that!)

Anything else? –”I love you Natalie!” (Awww!)

That’s it, the final installment of “What’s your favorite…” until next year! If a year is too long to wait you can entertain yourself with Ivy’s previous favorite things:

Ivy’s Favorites at Six Years Old

Ivy’s Favorite Things at Five Years Old

Ivy’s Favorite Things

Jane’s Favorites at Two Years Old

Jane what’s your favorite…Jane

Color – “Green!” (So it’s possible, green is her favorite color. Or it’s possible that she has NO IDEA what colors are what and she likes the sound of “GREEN!” best.)

Animal – cat

Food – sandwich

Clothes – glasses (She doesn’t own glasses and she is highly discouraged from borrowing her parents.)

Dog – Storm

Cat – Gypsy

Person – Ariel (Are mermaids people too?)

Thing to do – games

Thing to do outside – playin’

Chore – “money chores” (The older girls occasionally have “money jar chores” Jane has not yet joined them but perhaps she should!)

Time of day – “Go to school.” (Not sure about this, perhaps she is talking about taking Ivy to school?)

Place to go – “Go gummy bear foot.” (This isn’t a place to go, she’s been calling “bare foot”,  “gummy bear foot” and that’s just too cute not to share, so I didn’t press for a real location!)

Song – “Happy Birthday To You” (Sung to me of course. She sings all day long!)

Flower – nothin’ (Further asking got a “Green” and “Nope” odd for a girl who’s been picking everything that blooms in the yard.)

Farm Animal –vulture (Not a very successful farm apparently.)

Friend – Clara

Movie – Tinkerbell (Gag me.)

Thing to do with Clara – eatin’ food

Thing to do with Ivy – Nothin’ ( Poor Ivy! Let’s chalk this one up to Jane’s unwillingness to answer questions the two of them play great together!)

Thing to do with Dad – playin’

Thing to do with Me – Jane: “Doing stuff with you.”  Me:  “Like what?” Jane:  “WITH YOU!” (Got it!)

Book –  “Me read.” ( I investigated further and discovered that she meant that she likes it when she reads books to herself.)

Thing to do in the car – “Play with you.” ( I drive the car while suppressing my irritation with the back seat. I do not play in the car.)

What do you want to do when you grown up? “I six.”  (Further investigation, revealed nothing. When she grows up, she’ll be six. End of story.)

Anything else? – Jane: “My animals.” Me:  “What about them?” Jane:  “I have allllllllll” (No idea…)

So, what I really discovered doing this is that while Jane talks, and tells stories, and demands things, and sings songs all day long she doesn’t really answer questions. It took forever to gather the answers that I got because she initially answered everything “GREEN!” or “NOPE!” Not only does she not answer direct and random questions like, “What book do you like reading best.” but she also is quite good at evading everyday questions like, “Do you want to go outside?”. This is something which I hadn’t at all noticed until I started asking about her favorites and now I wonder how I missed it. For such a little talker she’s hard to pin down… perhaps when she’s grown up at six she’ll look into becoming a lawyer.

For last years investigation on Jane’s favorites go here:

A Study To Determine Jane’s Favorite Items At The Age Of 15 Months

Clara’s Favorites at Four Years Old

Clara what’s your favorite…Clara

Color – Blue ( We started out so succinct and normal…)

Animal – Clara: “Neeeighhh! I gave you a hint!” Me: “Horse? ” Clara: “And one more…” Me:  “Unicorn?” Clara: “Yes, and one more… WHOOP!” Me: ” A monkey?” Clara: “Yeah!” (….And there’s the Clara I know and love!)

Food-  hot dogs and brats

Clothes- “Fancy dresses and fancy pants AND fancy headbands.”

Dog- Digby

Cat- Momma cat, Cassie and Gypsy

Person- “Mom you don’t know? IT’S YOU!”

Friend- “Lola and Liberty”

Thing to do – “Go to Lola’s house.”

Thing to do outside-  “Swing on my favorite part of the rope swing, I always think I’m going to marry it. I have dreams of marrying a real rope swing!”

Chore- “Get the eggs!”

Time of day- Afternoon

Place to go- “Monkey Joe’s, zoo’s, aquariums and two more things… Going to Grandma Pats and going to Grandma Mary’s house and Lolas house and NeNe’s house… That’s all.” (Possibly we should have had a discussion of the meaning of the word favorite.”

Song – Wave Over Wave (Yeah, I don’t believe it. She never wants to hear this song and yells when she has to listen to it.)

Flower – “All the flowers in the wide world! … Don’t say wide world.” (So, I guess just “All the flowers.” then?)

Farm Animal –horse, goats and bunnies

Movie –Dora’s Easter Egg Hunt, Strawberry Shortcake (Are these even movies?)

Thing to do with Ivy – “I don’t like doing stuff with Ivy…But I play with her when you ask me to play with her.” (Then she looked at me and said, “Is Ivy going to read this!?” I told her no and she let her answer stand.)

Thing to do with Jane –Playing Darling and Mama. (My least favorite game, the one that involves fake crying, is, sadly, still her favorite.)

Thing to do with Dad – “Go to the bakery and story time and…” (She must have been running out of steam because she never made it any further on that one.)

Thing to do with Me – “Plant flowers and you push me on the rope swing.”

Book – “The Girl that doesn’t share her toys.” (Never heard of it.)

Meal- Breakfast and Dinner

Thing to do in the car –” HONK — PUURRRR!!!” (What this means is that what she likes to do is pretend snore at the top of her lungs. This cracks me up and drives Ivy crazy- which likely explains why she does it.)

What do you want to do when you grown up? “A grape picker that sells grapes… AND selling goats.” (Grapes?)

Anything else? – “Nope.” (Amazing!)Clara and Digby

A Study To Determine Jane’s Favorite Items At The Age Of 15 Months

This study is to determine the subject’s (Jane’s) favorite items at the age of 15 months. While the subject’s verbal skills are consistent with her age, they are not adequate or reliable enough for this task and conclusions will need to be drawn from direct daily observation of the subject.

Observation of Jane to determine favored objects:Jane peering

-In the bathroom a wire basket and a half eaten piece of toast are abandoned for a pink golf ball. (Observer was surprised that the golf ball left the bathroom with the subject as usually such objects are left on the floor so that the subject may leave both hands free to empty drawers of toiletries. This drawer emptying behavior was not exhibited during the study and will not be used when drawing conclusions though the lack of this behavior does make the mother of the subject hopeful.)

-A pile of plastic bottle caps are left strewn over the floor in favor of the wireless mouse which is in turn discarded for the batteries inside the mouse.  (At this point the observer was forced to interfere with study subject to prevent ingestion of batteries. A phenomenon known as “Moms ruin all the fun.”).

-Looking at a book in subject’s parent’s bed ends as soon as the subject remembers she can turn the clock radio on.

-Small rocks from the driveway are returned to the ground before the subject was able to taste them when she started to chase a “CHIEN!” across the yard. (Judging by the results, the object in question is a chicken and it is less excited about the chase than the subject.)

-Subject drops all food and toys for ChapStick.Jane pointing

In conclusion the observer believes that ChapStick and chickens are the subject’s favorite items.

Interestingly, the child is also either lacking in developmentally appropriate toys or developmentally appropriate toys are boring and ignored in favor of general household detritus. The answer to this question is beyond the scope of this study and warrants further testing.

Ivy’s Favorites at Six Years Old

Ivy, what’s your favorite…DSCN1081-(4sm)

Color – pink

Animal – Lion, because of Henry. (The name of the lion at our local zoo.)

Food –  pizza and macaroni and cheese

Clothes – orange dance pants (Which on “orange day” at school she told me that she hated orange and would never wear those pants. Of course on “pink day” she wouldn’t wear pink so I think it’s less a problem of clothes and more of contrariness. No idea where she’d get that from….)

Dog – Poodle because they are so puffed up and fluffy. (Hilarious and terrible all at once!)

Cat – Fiona (I think I have to throw this question out, I’m not sure my girls know any other cats anymore.)

Person – You! – and Dad.

Thing to do – Sing songs.

Thing to do outside – Go to the playground.

Chore – Play with my sisters. (…was the answer after the biggest groan a six year old can muster.)

Time of day – afternoon

Place to go – Michigan

Song – Better Dig Two (Band Perry) and White Horse (Taylor Swift)

Flower – Roses and Daffodils and Tiger Lily’s

Farm Animal – horse

Thing about school – math (Possibly she’s not my child an actually a cunningly disguised alien.)

Friend – Mallori, Gabby and Natalie!

Movie – Elmo (???)

Thing to do with Clara – Play with fairies in the fairy gardens and play with barbies.

Thing to do with Jane – Feed her. (True, the kids fight over who gets to sit next to Jane and give her food during dinner.)

Thing to do with Dad – Get ready for school.

Thing to do with Me – Watch a movie together. (This was clearly wishful thinking, Clara has been sick and watching movies and Ivy is going green just thinking about all the movie watching time she’s missed.)

Book – The Belly Button Book (Sandra Boyton wins again!)

Meal -Breakfast (HA! You’d think she’d be willing to eat during her favorite meal!)

Thing to do in the car – Color in my binder. (That would be the binders I put together for the kids when we went to Kansas that we now pull out for any longer car trip. Best. Idea. Ever. It came from here: gluesticksblog.com Just be sure to add dry erase markers, they make it all extra fun. )

What do you want to do when you grown up? Be a mom.

Anything else? – “I have another favorite animal! Unicorn!”

This is the third year of Ivy’s favorites and it’s interesting to see what the few answers are that haven’t changed. Her favorite color is still pink, Natalie is still her friend and Fiona is still her favorite cat. I can hardly imagine what next year will bring!

Ivy’s favorites 2012

Ivy’s favorites 2011

Clara’s Favorites at Three Years Old

Clara, what’s your favorite…Clara in chicken coop

thing to do on the park – Go on everything.

thing to do in the car – Play with our fairies.

song – Rock-a-bye Baby (I think she thought it had to be a song she knew how to sing and her repertoire is limited.)

flower-  daffodils

farm animal – ducks

And then I asked the bonus question…

What do you want to do when you grow up? – Sleep in your and Dad’s bed. (As if she doesn’t end up there by morning half the time already!)

I rephrased and explained what I meant by “grow up” many times  and the new answer was – Help you feed your goats.  (Which I don’t have, but I do talk about getting some someday. Good to know I’ll have help if it ever happens!)

As always it was an amusing experience! You can look back and see how they have changed from last year here: (Clara’s Favorites at Two Years Old). Many of Clara’s answers have changed in the last year but I’m glad that blue is still holding on as a favorite color!

Farm Animal – goat

After that exchange there is only one thing I can think to say. In the word(s) of my friend Katie that was:

Hilarious.

Ivy’s Favorite Things at Five Years Old

A little over a year ago I tried to ask Ivy as many questions as she asked me. I never succeeded in my efforts to even out the question asking but I wrote down some of her answers and you can find them here: Ivy’s Favorite Things.

A year later and Ivy is still full of insatiable curiosity.  Lately it’s been questions about books and songs, lots of questions.  Recently we were listening to Great Big Sea, she was happily singing along and then…

“Mom what does corpse mean?”

“Mom, what does bore mean?”

I started thinking that I’d better put in a different CD before I had to answer trickier questions than explaining that there was a dead guy floating on a piece of wood. Then I got distracted…

“Mom, why did she give him a baby?”

Oops!

Personally I didn’t think about the words of the songs I was listening to until I was about 25.  Apparently Ivy’s a bit more precocious than that.

In any case,  I thought it was once again time for a little score settling on the question asking, so I pulled up our list from last year.

Ivy, what is your favorite…

Color- pink/purple

Animal –unicorn -giggle, giggle – horse

Food – grilled cheese sandwich

Clothes – blue stripy dress (the one in the picture)

Dog – Trip

Cat – Fiona

Person – Katie (Way to go Katie Sal!)

Thing to do – Play with Joe. (Umm… Katie it’s possible this answer moved you from the category of favorite person to favorite mom of the friend I’d like to play with right now – sorry about that!)

Thing to do inside – take a nap (and to that I say – HA!)

Chore- “I don’t like doin’ chores.”

Time of day – noon

Place to go  – museum

Thing to do at the park – swing

Book – Walter the Baker and Pancakes Pancakes!

Thing to do with Clara – play

Thing to do with Jane – lay (as in lay on the floor next to her)

Friend – Natalie

Meal – “I don’t like breakfast.” (Me: “Yes, but what do you like, what’s your favorite?” Ivy: “Pancakes.” )

Movie – Milo and Otis

To do in the car- read books with you

Song – Pick Yourself Up by Fred Astaire

Flower – planies  (Known as peonies to the rest of us.)

Farm Animal – horse

I had a fun time comparing this list to last years, I’m hoping I can remember to do it again next spring!

Pink and Blue

Just in case you missed it I’d like you to know that Ivy loves pink.

In case she wasn’t the one to tell you that I”ll just quick clarify that her favorites are dark pink and dark purple, she wouldn’t want you to be confused about that.

She also loves, horses, fairy’s and princesses.

Ivy is my daughter who goes to pick pumpkins in an outfit like this:

I love the girl but some days most days the girly girl stuff completely baffles me. (Skirts in November? Why Ivy, why?)

Then there is my bug lover Clara.

She also loves dogs,  shopping and her “pink blanket”  which is green.

Clara is baffling for other reasons. (Shopping?!? Real shopping and pretend?)

Love of shopping aside I must say that it warmed this mothers heart more than reasonable when Clara and I were looking at a book together and she said:

“Me wike boo Mom.”

After four years of all pink all the time, I think I’m ready to add a bit of blue!

Ivy’s Favorite Things

Sometimes when trying to distract Ivy I ask her a million “What’s your favorite…” questions.

I feel it evens us out a bit on the question asking.

Here is our last question and answer session.

What is your favorite…

Color- Pink

Animal – Ponies and Horses (Don’t try to make her pick just one or she’ll get mad at you!)

Food – Bananas and Apples (really? really?)

Clothes- Dresses and Skirts (Bananas and dresses, how does this happen???)

Dog – Piper

Cat – Fiona

Person -Mom

Thing to do – Picking flowers and raspberries and blueberries (She’s never picked blueberries, but she has picked and delivered at least three bunches of imaginary flowers today.)

Thing to do inside -just play

Chore- baby chicks

Time of day – night time (Odd since night time and bedtime are usually linked in her mind but I’ll go with it.)

Place to go  -park

Thing to do at the park – go on the slides

Book – Elephants Child

Thing to do with Clara -wrestle (Yes, unfortunately it is.  If Clara could talk I doubt she would answer the same.)

Friend -Natalie and horses…Natalie (Go Natalie, you got a billing above horses!)

Uncle -Tyler (actually this was me saying “What’s your favorite..” and she said “Uncle! Tyler!”)

Meal – Macaroni

Movie -Xialin showdown (Which I suspect she hasn’t seen in about a year and never requests to watch, but really, what do I know!)

To do in the car- (After lots of thinking…) play with horses and ponies

There you have it, Ivy’s favorite things of the moment.

She changes her answers often.

This is good.

It gives me hope that wrestling and bananas could be on their way out!
